Our Founding Values
Originally adopted in 2010:
The Humane Party recognizes that the most ethical path is also the most practical path for America.
The ethical path is to forge a humane national identity, one which prizes empowered voters over elite insiders, respect over exploitation, initiative over entitlement, restraint over indulgence, transparency over obfuscation, foresight over myopia, and conservation over waste.
The practical path is to forgo unsustainable—and destructive—practices that weaken our economy, accelerate our health care costs, compromise our descendants’ fiscal future, squander our natural resources, engender hostility among our fellow nations, and endanger our national security.

Our Values Today
The Humane Party is a liberation movement grounded in the belief that political decisions should be guided by compassion, evidence, justice, and respect for all beings.
Our values shape not only the policies we advocate for, but the kind of political culture we are working to build.
Liberation
We believe freedom from exploitation, oppression, and unnecessary suffering should not depend on species, status, identity, wealth, or political power.
Liberation asks us to look beyond the boundaries of traditional politics and consider who has been excluded from protection, whose interests have been ignored, and what systems continue to cause preventable harm.
Compassion
Compassion belongs in government.
We believe public policy should recognize the real consequences political decisions have for people, other animals, communities, and the world we share.
Compassion does not replace reason. It gives us a reason to use it.
Science and Evidence
Good intentions are not enough.
We value science, credible evidence, critical thinking, and a willingness to reconsider approaches when better information becomes available.
Humane policy should be both ethical and effective.
Justice and Equal Protection
Rights should not exist only for those with the greatest political influence.
We believe in strengthening civil rights, expanding meaningful protection under the law, confronting discrimination and exploitation, and continuing to question where the boundaries of legal and moral consideration have been drawn.
Democracy and Participation
Democracy is strongest when people can meaningfully participate in it.
We value transparent government, accountable leadership, fair representation, political engagement, and opportunities for ordinary people to help shape the decisions that affect their lives and communities.
Sustainability
A prosperous future cannot be built by exhausting the resources, ecosystems, and living communities upon which that future depends.
We support responsible stewardship, long-term thinking, and economic and environmental policies designed to allow generations to thrive without treating others as disposable.
Integrity
The values we ask government and candidates to uphold should also guide how we conduct ourselves.
We value honesty, accountability, transparency, respectful disagreement, and the willingness to acknowledge mistakes and continue learning.
Collaboration
No single organization owns the work of liberation.
We believe progress is strengthened when people and organizations can work together around shared goals, even when they do not agree on everything.
Coalition-building, listening, education, and respectful dialogue expand what humane politics can accomplish.
Ethics Into Action
These values are not intended to exist only on a website.
They guide how we approach candidates, public policy, advocacy, partnerships, organizing, and the continued growth of the Humane Party.
We are a political party. A growing community. A liberation movement.
And we are building a political future in which compassion is not dismissed as weakness, evidence matters, rights continue to expand, and our responsibility to one another extends beyond ourselves.
